Unleash your inner Rick James with the Ulysse Nardin Super Freak white gold watch.
That watch looks incredibly cool.
“It’s a very unconventional watch/the kind you wouldn’t take home to your mom/once you wear it, it will never disappoint.” Now you can unleash your inner Rick James with the Ulysse Nardin Super Freak watch. This timepiece was launched to commemorate the brand’s 180th anniversary and is another masterpiece 25 years after the original Freak watch. It features a 44mm white gold case with a more refined and stylish design. But it remains quite unconventional.
Ulysse Nardin is a pioneer of Nouvelle Horlogerie. The Freak watch, launched 25 years ago, inspired and motivated brands like MB&F and Urwerk with its avant-garde design. At Watches and Wonders 2026, Ulysse Nardin unveiled a limited edition of 50 Super Freak watches (model: 2520-500LE-3A-BLUE/3A). This timepiece continues Ulysse Nardin's experimental and innovative spirit, presented in a more refined and complex manner. Compared to previous models, the case diameter is slightly smaller, and the proportions are more harmonious. Furthermore, the upgraded bezel locking system is more seamlessly integrated into the overall design. As is classic in the Freak series, the bezel is used for setting the time, while the case back is used for winding the movement.
This white gold Ulysse Nardin Super Freak watch is constantly rotating.
While this is not new, the rotating movement that displays time without traditional hands is still stunning. The transparent blue rotating disc completes one revolution every 12 hours. Because it is made of transparent blue nanosital alloy, its internal mechanical structure is clearly visible. Nano-alloys are a synthetic material chosen for their transparency and durability. This watch also features luminescent hour markers for clear readability even in dark environments. A major highlight of this latest evolution of the enduring "Freak Show" timepiece is the addition of a seconds display. This feature, never before seen in the Freak series, is made possible by a newly developed, complex, and sophisticated transmission system.
At the heart of the Super Freak watch is the new in-house automatic movement UN-252, composed of 511 parts. Developed over four years, this movement features a double tourbillon structure combined with a flying disc system. Two tilted flying tourbillons, each at a 10-degree angle to the dial, rotate in opposite directions, completing a full rotation every 60 seconds. They are mounted on a lightweight titanium bridge, which also serves as the minute indicator. The entire disc rotates once per hour, perfectly complementing the Freak watch's signature display method. According to the brand, over 97% of the movement's parts are in continuous motion, with only a very small number remaining stationary.
The Grinder mechanism initiates its operation.
Ulysse Nardin's patented Grinder automatic winding system manages the energy. It detects even the slightest wrist movement, maximizing efficiency. Given the energy demands of the double tourbillon, a frictionless winding mechanism is crucial. The smooth Grinder system performs its task admirably, ensuring a consistent power reserve of approximately three days. The movement also features a compact 5mm wide differential mechanism to average the rotation speed of the two tourbillons, ensuring accurate timekeeping. This differential works in conjunction with a newly patented gimbal system to transfer energy to the off-center seconds display.
Materials technology plays a vital role in the movement's construction. Ulysse Nardin extensively uses silicon components, including the balance wheel, hairspring, and escapement. The brand's exclusive DIAmonSIL process, which coats silicon components with a diamond coating to enhance scratch resistance and reduce friction, undoubtedly contributes to the smooth operation of the complex Super Freak movement. Furthermore, the use of titanium structural components also helps reduce weight. This movement features a multi-layered structure, creating a rich visual effect and emphasizing depth. The skeletonized design highlights the mechanical components and their operation. Despite its focus on technical detail, UN employs traditional surface finishing techniques. The titanium components are notoriously difficult to machine, but the brand boldly embraces this approach. A significant portion of the components undergoes hand-finishing, such as texturing and sandblasting.
A Super Freak from La Chaux-de-Fonds
The Super Freak watch is assembled in UN's workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Each timepiece is completed independently by a single watchmaker, requiring approximately 60 hours of work, followed by several days of testing and adjustment. The entire process includes complete assembly, disassembly and cleaning, and final reassembly to ensure the watch's performance meets standards.
You might think that this 44 × 16.54 mm Super Freak watch is unsuitable for wearing anywhere but on the wrist. But despite its bold and avant-garde nature, it is precisely meant to be worn on the wrist. This watch features a grey rubber strap with two white stitches and a fabric-textured finish, and a white gold folding clasp.
